J. Allen Daughtery [alias “Red Spot] first signaled his presence in SoHo in the early 1980s through the appearance of mysterious painted red circles with the word RED SPOT. Between 1982 and 1988, when he died, Red Spot presented exhibitions of 16mm color slides altered by artists that were projected at night onto building walls. The uncredited poster for projections dating from September 14 to October 5, 1985, “Women in the Streets,” could had advertised some mildly sleazy 1950s B movie. If its title, printed in blood-red, slapdash letters over a stark black background, has, given the nature of the event, a catchy double entente, it also related to the urban experience informing the work of many artists of the 1980s.
